A deadly escape

Unlike enveloped viruses that bud from the host cell membrane, non-enveloped viruses such as norovirus typically exit the host cell through cell lysis, a process that involves the rupture of the host cell membrane. This dependence on cellular lysis suggests that non-enveloped viruses may have evolved mechanisms to induce cell death. Now, in a recent study, Wang et al. report a molecular mechanism of norovirus-induced cell death to promote viral egress.
