Heterogeneous nucleation events are involved in physical processes ranging from the growth of amyloid fibrils, which have been connected with the development of Alzheimer disease, to the formation of frost on fruits, which can damage crops. However, these processes are still poorly understood owing to a lack of experimental techniques with the spatial and temporal resolution required to observe atomic-scale nucleation and thus verify theory.
