Bronchial cytology of pulmonary adenoid cystic carcinoma – A multi-institute series with emphasis on immunocytochemistry

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (AdCC) is a salivary-gland type neoplasm that can be found in extra-salivary sites including the trachea and bronchus [1]. Central and superficial lesions such as pulmonary AdCC are suitable for sampling by bronchial cytology [2]. However, pulmonary AdCC is rare and shows a diverse range of cytologic features that overlaps with other pulmonary carcinomas. In this case series, a multi-institute review of bronchial cytology specimens from histologically proven pulmonary AdCCs was performed. Published cases of bronchial cytology of pulmonary AdCC were reviewed. This study reports the first experience of immunocytochemistry in bronchial cytology for pulmonary AdCC in the literature, with a comprehensive review of the cytologic features and diagnostic categories reported for pulmonary AdCC.
