Anoikis resistance through blebs

Most cells require attachment to the extracellular matrix (ECM) for survival, and upon detachment undergo a form of apoptotic cell death called anoikis. However, some cells, prominently cancer cells, gain resistance to anoikis. The mechanisms responsible for anoikis inhibition have remained elusive. Weems et al. now show that sustained membrane blebbing promotes pro-survival signalling in ECM-detached cells.
