Dehumanization propensity as an individual difference

Researchers acknowledged the need for an individual difference approach to dehumanization, yet this topic has not been given sufficient attention until recently. This article summarizes the support for the existence of dehumanization propensity, a trait-like variable which captures the ease with which and the extent to which individuals may engage a dehumanized cognition in their everyday lives. It further discusses the recent development of the Humanity Inventory, the first scale created with the aim to assess dehumanization propensity. Unlike previous measures focusing on assessing the dehumanization of a target, this self-report measure prompts individuals to indicate how they view themselves and the world, free from the influence of the social context. Future research directions are discussed.
