A survey on the experience of risk-taking behaviors of bedridden patients in neurosurgery

Bedridden patients can harm themselves, up to put their lives in danger, in numerous clinical conditions, such as agitation and confusion, irrespective of the cause, e.g., metabolic, drug interactions, or intercurrent diseases. Yet the risk-taking behaviors of bedridden patients had received little interest [1], conversely to the fall risks when walking notably in the elderly [2], [3], [4]. The most frequent and dangerous conditions are related to physical restraints such as bed barriers and body belts, which can trap patients, during voluntary or unvoluntary movements, leading to asphyxia and death [5]. We carried out a short survey, in bedridden patients in neurosurgery, aiming to estimate the experiences of risk-taking patients and falls, by caregivers. We wanted to quantify the conditions of discovery and the solutions commonly adopted in clinical practice, to devise future solutions for the prevention of accidents.
