Integrated cardio-behavioural defensive states

The defensive reaction to threat is mediated by neural circuits that integrate complex behavioural and autonomic responses, but paradoxical heart rate (HR) changes have been reported. Here, Signoret-Genest et al. clarify that different defensive states in mice involve specific transient cardio-behavioural responses. Furthermore, these responses are constrained by global changes in cardiovascular dynamics that occur over extended timescales of threat exposure.
