A novel therapy in paclitaxel-related cystoid macular edema: Brimonidine

Taxane agents are widely used in chemotherapy (CT) by disrupting the mitotic activities of cells through microtubules. It has very common areas of use, especially in ovarian, lung, breast cancers [1]. The broad side-effect profile of chemotherapeutics is unfortunately also available in taxanes. Cystoid macular edema (CME) is the second most common side effect after meibomian dysfunction in the ophthalmological side effect study of taxanes performed in the Mayo clinic [2]. These patients are rarely seen and have difficulty in treatment due to their systemic conditions.

We present a case of taxane-associated CME, which responded to topical brimonidine in a very short time.
