Mathematical concepts

Many anaesthetists avoid learning about core mathematical principles in the belief that they are too hard, irrelevant, or both. The truth is that they are as attainable as any other area of knowledge skill you once thought too hard but have now mastered, and are as important as learning phonics (the sounds of letters) is to reading. Maths provides the building blocks for the sciences – on which we base much of our practice and even more of our exams. By understanding mathematical principles you can give yourself the intellectual flexibility to understand a wider range of situations than those limited to the exam. In this paper, we will cover the principles of exponential growth, decay, and how these phenomena can be further analysed by using differentiation and integration.
