Chromatin organization in red triangles

The long, double-stranded DNA helix needs to be precisely compacted in the small space of the cell nucleus. In interphase, using fluorescent dyes, the chromatin appears as a diffuse and haphazard pattern of dark and light areas, but the exact structure of this ‘ball’ of DNA and proteins is not visible. If we could take a thread and slowly unwind this tangled skein of DNA, could we reveal the layers of chromatin architecture?
