Preexisting Immunity: Barrier or Bridge to Effective Oncolytic Virus Therapy?

Christianne Groeneveldt is a PhD student in the Department of Medical Oncology at Leiden University Medical Center in Leiden, The Netherlands. The focus of her PhD research is to harness the immunostimulatory properties of oncolytic reovirus for effective anticancer therapy. She got interested in oncolytic viruses during her Master’s degree in Bio-Pharmaceutical Sciences when she conducted an internship at the ImmunoViroTherapy lab of Prof. Vincenzo Cerullo at the University of Helsinki. She currently researches the effect of preexisting immunity on the efficacy of reovirus therapy.

Jasper van den Ende earned his Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Sciences at Utrecht University (The Netherlands) and is now pursuing a Master’s degree in Infection & Immunity there. Currently, he is investigating the migration and dynamics of intravascular antiviral CD8+ T cells as an intern in the von Andrian laboratory at Harvard Medical School (USA). His main research interests lie at the interface of fundamental and translational viral infection biology, immunology and cell biology.

Nadine van Montfoort is an immunologist, with a specialization in immunity to tumors and viruses. By understanding similarities between viral and tumor immunity, she aims to develop novel immunotherapeutic approaches for cancer in the GI tract. The current focus of her team is on exploring the immune-stimulatory properties of tumor-killing (oncolytic) viruses. She works as assistant professor in the department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Leiden University Medical Center and currently leads a group of three Ph.D. students, one research technician and one student.
