Self-healing Roman concrete

Concrete is ubiquitous in contemporary architecture, but its production is associated with a large environmental footprint that is exacerbated by concrete’s poor durability. By contrast, ancient Roman concrete has stood for millennia, but the mechanisms behind this impressive durability are still poorly understood. Now, writing in Science Advances, Admir Masic and colleagues suggest that an overlooked ancient Roman concrete component might be the key to its durability.
