Obesity induces epigenetic memory in innate immune cells

Obesity is the second highest risk factor for age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the leading cause of loss of sight in older people. Obesity substantially increases the risk of developing late-stage AMD, characterized by choroidal neovascularization (CNV), through the promotion of systemic inflammation, which can activate innate immune cells to exacerbate CNV. A new study in Science investigates the mechanisms behind this immune activation and whether weight loss can mitigate the effects.
