Two-way communication

Processing of sensory information involves interhemispheric communication between sensory cortices via the corpus callosum (CC) and can be impaired in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Many genes associated with a high risk of ASD — for example, GABRB3, which encodes the β3 subunit of the GABAA receptor — are involved in inhibitory neurotransmission, but whether disrupted inhibition affects long-range interhemispheric projections is unknown.
