I want to thank Drs. Samir Mardini and Basel Sharaf for sharing the responsibility as guest editors for this issue of Seminars in Plastic Surgery on “Advances in Virtual Surgical Planning and Three-Dimensional Printing in Facial Reconstruction and Aesthetic Surgery” and the invited authors for sharing their experience.

Samir Mardini, MD, is professor of surgery and Chairman of the Division of Plastic Surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Dr. Mardini is Director of the Craniofacial Clinic, Facial Reanimation Clinic and Surgical Director of the Essam and Dalal Obaid Center for Reconstructive Transplant Surgery at Mayo Clinic. After completing his plastic surgery residency at Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington, DC, Dr. Mardini completed a one-year fellowship in craniomaxillofacial surgery with Professor Yu-Ray Chan and a two-year fellowship in reconstructive microsurgery with Professor Fu-Chan Wei. Dr. Mardini remained in Taiwan for more than 5 years before joining the faculty at Mayo Clinic.

Dr. Mardini has published more than 185 peer-reviewed articles, 30 book chapters, and 3 books. He is an editorial board member and reviewer for several plastic surgery journals. Dr. Mardini is a member of the American Society of Reconstructive Microsurgery, Founding Member of the American Society of Reconstructive Transplantation, and Founding member and Council Member of the World Society of Reconstructive Microsurgery.

Dr. Basel Sharaf is the practice chair of Mayo Clinic's Center for Aesthetic Medicine and Surgery and co-director of the Oculofacial Plastic Clinic. Dr. Sharaf trained in maxillofacial surgery at Harvard University, plastic surgery at Montefiore/Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, and microsurgery at MD Anderson Cancer Center. Dr. Sharaf is double board certified in plastic surgery and oral and maxillofacial surgery and is currently Associate Professor of Plastic Surgery at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and consultant plastic surgeon in the Division of Plastic Surgery at Mayo Clinic. Dr. Sharaf has published over 50 peer-reviewed articles and 13 book chapters. Dr. Sharaf is the current chair of the quality committee in the Department of Surgery at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota and focuses his practice on craniomaxillofacial surgery, facial aesthetic surgery, orbital, and eyelid reconstruction with emphasis on incorporating virtual planning and three-dimensional printing in clinical practice.
