Carbohydrate-based N-heterocyclic Carbene-Metal Complexes: A New Avenue for Sustainable Catalyst in Organic Transformations

N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) and their metal complexes have been employed as a catalyst in organic transformations due to its high efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and extraordinary performance. Carbohydrates are inexpensive, nontoxic biomolecules that act as chiral building blocks and it has high water solubility. In the last few years, significant interests have been shown towards the development of carbohydrates based NHC ligand and its metal complexes from the view point of sustainable chemistry. The combined properties of carbohydrate with NHC enhances catalytic performance, solubility, chemo selectivity, and reusability. This particular review intends to highlight both the importance of synthetic methods of carbohydrate-based N-heterocyclic carbene-metal complexes (CNHC-M) and their applications in organic transformations.
