If translational research is the hallmark of the DNP, then why isn’t the DNP classified as a research degree?
•Translational research focuses on acquiring knowledge surrounding clinical diagnosis, treatment, and prevention
•When the research question asks if the evidence improves care outcomes the appropriate research method is translational
•The DNP needs to be revisited as both a practice and a research degree
AbstractFor decades the DNP (Doctor of Nursing Practice) degree has been referred to as practice focused whereas the PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) has been identified as research focused. The time has come to revisit that classification. Although the PhD has remained unchanged in its focus to prepare nurse researchers, the DNP has steadily evolved over time. Graduates of DNP programs are tasked with applying evidence-based practice research findings to the real-world environment thereby reducing the gap between research and practice. This process has been termed translational science which has evolved into translational research. If, in fact, translational research is a recognized form of research methodology, and the DNP graduate is skilled in this form of research, then the DNP should be redefined as both a practice and research degree.
