Healing of a Nurse's Heart

Megan Hamilton is a nurse educator in Montana with nearly 30 years of experience in emergency nursing and emergency medical services. “In this art piece, I capture some of the impact my work has had on my heart and my brain,” she says. “There are events imprinted on a nurse's heart, and they come from so many interactions: patients, families, circumstances. Along with the pride, the wins, the good, there's also the compassion fatigue, the grief, the sadness, the anger. There were ways in which I attempted to build a barrier to protect myself. But that barrier wasn't strong enough to keep it all out. Or perhaps my heart was too big to stay behind the barrier. The broken pieces have been put back together with whatever could be found. Some wounds have healed, others are still trying to, and still others have left deep reminders.” Healing of a Nurse's Heart © 2022 by Megan Hamilton. Contact artist: [email protected].
