Viral protection from viruses

Endogenous retroviruses (ERVs) are major contributors to mammalian genomes, where despite potential for mobilization-based genome instability, they also provide useful host functions such as regulatory elements, non-coding RNAs and envelope-derived proteins with roles in placental cell–cell fusion. A new paper in Science reports that human genomes encode a large repertoire of envelope-derived proteins, with potential additional roles in protecting from infection by other retroviruses.
