Assigning phenotypes to essential human genes

Genetic perturbation studies are central to determine which genes are essential for which cellular pathways. However, many phenotypes can only be assessed using image-based approaches, and existing methods are limited by either the number of genes or the range of phenotypes that can be analysed. Now, a study in Cell reports an imaging-based pooled CRISPR screening approach that can assess thousands of genes simultaneously for their involvement in multiple and diverse cellular processes.
