At the end of 2022, the terms of Dr. Dwight J. Rouse, Deputy Editor for Obstetrics, and Dr. John O. Schorge, Deputy Editor for Gynecology, will come to a close. It's with enormous gratitude that the Editor-in-Chief, Dr. Jason Wright, thanks them for their contributions to Obstetrics & Gynecology.

Dwight J. Rouse, MD, MSPH

Dr. Dwight J. Rouse has been a pillar of Obstetrics & Gynecology. Dwight served on our Editorial Board from 2002 to 2007. In 2013, he was appointed Associate Editor for Obstetrics. He served in this role until he led the journal as Editor-in-Chief from January 2021 to the end of 2021. In 2022, Dwight was appointed Deputy Editor for Obstetrics.

Dwight is an editor's editor. He is brilliant, diligent, conscientious, and efficient in his editorial work. Dwight has an uncanny ability to dissect the good, the bad, and the ugly of a manuscript. Dwight lives by the principles of evidence-based medicine, and, through his role as an editor, has driven the practice of obstetrics forward. As such, he sets a high bar for submissions. He holds steadfast to research principles and will not allow conclusions beyond those that can be drawn based on the study design. He recognizes the power of language—ensuring that the abstract and precis convey the take-home message for practicing clinicians. Dwight's passion and intellect are clear in all of his editorial contributions. Not only does Dwight make our journal better, he makes the rest of our team better editors.

Those who know Dwight have likely experienced his wit and humor. His trademark sarcasm and good-natured humor can bring levity to any situation or meeting. As you get to know Dwight, you quickly learn that his sarcasm is matched only by his depth of kindness and giving nature. Dwight seemingly never says no to any task that is asked of him. In particular, he goes out of his way to help other editors and the staff and is a vocal proponent of early-career investigators and junior faculty.

Dwight has made innumerable contributions to the Journal over the past decade. During his tenure, we've seen an increase in the quality and quantity of obstetric submissions. Dwight has worked tirelessly to promote the journal and increase high-quality manuscripts, and he led the development of our Portable Peer Review Program. Dwight oversaw the implementation of our double-blind peer review process. Similarly, Dwight is a tireless advocate for the editorial board and peer reviewers; he does whatever it takes to help reduce the burden of often voluntary work while maintaining the quality of the journal and our peer-review process.

John O. Schorge, MD

Dr. John O. Schorge has a storied history with Obstetrics & Gynecology. John first joined the Green Journal as a member of the Editorial Board in 2015. After a national search, he was appointed Associate Editor for Gynecology in 2018. In 2022, the scope and portfolio of John's work was further expanded, and he was appointed Deputy Editor for Gynecology.

Despite our title of Obstetrics & Gynecology, many have quipped that we're primarily an obstetrics journal. John set out to change this, and, under his watch, we achieved parity between obstetric and gynecologic published articles. John successfully promoted our efforts to ensure that gynecology remained an important focus of the Journal and increased the volume of submissions and publications of high-quality work in general gynecology as well as across the gynecologic subspecialties. To use the parlance of our specialty, John put the GYN back in Obstetrics & Gynecology.

John is a no-nonsense, pragmatic editor. He has an uncanny ability to capture the essence of a manuscript in one sentence. In a recent editorial meeting, John summed up his position on a submission in his typical style with the simple comment of “No.” While some may feel the need to wax poetic to flex their intellectual muscle, this isn't John's style. Those around him do not need to be convinced of John's intellect and capability; it is simply accepted. In line with these attributes, John is a thoughtful and diligent editor. Even for manuscripts in which he is only peripherally involved, he frequently provides insight and comments to other editors to significantly improve a submission.

All of us who know John also know his dedication to education. John's a consummate educator and mentor, and he brings this passion to the Journal. As an active clinician, John recognizes the importance of providing guidance and educational resources on gynecologic topics for clinicians in the trenches. Thus, he made a determined effort to boost submissions of high-quality review articles as part of our Clinical Expert Series. Similarly, John has been a constant advocate for involving junior physicians and investigators in academic publishing and has been prolific in recruiting and developing new reviewers for the Journal.

It's with sincere gratitude that I thank Drs. Rouse and Schorge for their service to Obstetrics & Gynecology. Their contributions not only have made the Green Journal stronger, but have advanced the science and knowledge of the practice of obstetrics and gynecology. The Journal will not be the same without them.
