The DFE Holds a Seminar on Qatar Economic Outlook

The Department of Finance and Economics (DFE) at the College of Business and Economics (CBE) of Qatar University (QU) hosted the seminar titled “What is next for Qatar’s Economy?” on November 7, 2022.

Dr. Luiz Pinto, Senior Economist at the Group Strategy Department of Qatar National Bank (QNB), conducted the seminar.

Prof. Mohamed Goaied, Head of the DFE at CBE, introduced the guest speaker to CBE faculty and students emphasizing Dr. Luiz Pinto’s vast experience covering global macro and emerging markets (EM) as he was a senior advisor to international organizations, FT EM 500 companies, sovereigns and think tanks.

The seminar presented QNB Group’s latest outlook for the Qatari economy. It also discussed the opportunities and challenges going forward amidst the current headlines including the Ukraine War and the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. Dr. Pinto clarified that Qatar’s proven gas reserves would last for over a hundred years at the current extraction rates. He also explained how Qatar had maintained a substantial trade surplus, with exports much greater than imports despite oil price volatility during diversification. Dr. Pinto also pointed out how the country’s transformation was supported by a range of major infrastructure and investment spending programs.

He concluded his speech with how Qatar’s diversification and expansion efforts will continue and deliver strong economic growth in the coming years.
Prof. Rana Sobh, the Dean of CBE, thanked the guest speaker and gave him a certificate of appreciation for his very valuable seminar and insightful discussion into the Economic Outlook for Qatar.
