The Strategies of ‘Getting It Out the Door’: Personal Finance Lessons Applied to Writing for Scholarly Publishing

While guides to productivity in scholarly writing often mention what kinds of writing should be prioritized through the scholarly publishing process, less attention has been paid to clearly conceptualizing what strategic approaches to prioritizing writing best meet particular goals. This article turns to the personal finance literature to translate two key strategies—the avalanche and the snowball—from the context of debt repayment to that of scholarly writing. By clearly identifying the strategies, logics, and aims of these two approaches to writing, scholars can more clearly meet specific goals related to their publications. This marks a conceptual contribution to the literature on scholarly writing by introducing a theoretical framework for writing strategy.
