In 2014, a systematic analysis by the World Health Organization found that the leading causes of maternal mortality were obstetric hemorrhage, hypertensive disorders, and pregnancy-related sepsis. However, in the United States, the leading causes of maternal death are cardiovascular conditions, noncardiovascular underlying medical conditions, and infection.
