Ultra-processed diet increases CRC risk

A study comprising three USA prospective cohorts (men = 46,341; women = 159,907) examined the association between ultra-processed food consumption and colorectal cancer (CRC) risk. In a follow-up of 24–28 years, 3,216 CRC cases were reported. Men with the highest overall consumption of ultra-processed food (such as meat ready-to-eat products and sugar-sweetened beverages) had a 29% increased risk of developing CRC compared with those with the lowest consumption (HR 1.29; 95% CI 1.08–1.53). No association was observed between the overall ultra-processed diet and CRC risk among women.
