AbstractOcular injuries are an uncommon, but well recognised risk in prone position surgery and are both difficult to diagnose in the intensive care setting and associated with significant morbidity. An understanding of the types of ocular injury can improve efforts to prevent their development. When this fails, prompt diagnosis and involvement of an ophthalmic specialist is key to ensuring an optimal outcome. This article details the presentation, pathophysiology, prevention and management of ocular injuries that occur during prone ventilation in the intensive care setting.
