Motor rehabilitation as a therapeutic tool for spinal cord injury: new perspectives in immunomodulation

Image 1Ciara M. Walsh is a PhD student in the School of Medicine at University College Dublin, Ireland. She graduated from Dublin City University in 2020 with a BSc in Genetics and Cell Biology. Her current research focuses on the development of biomaterial-based drug delivery systems for preclinical spinal cord injury, with a particular interest in sustained and localised delivery of anti-inflammatory cytokines with immunomodulatory potential.

Image 2Dearbhaile Dooley is a Principal Investigator at the School of Medicine, University College Dublin (UCD), Ireland and a Conway Fellow at the UCD Conway Institute of Biomolecular & Biomedical Research. She leads a preclinical spinal cord injury research lab which aims to identify, validate and specifically target key factors involved in the spinal cord injury inflammatory response in order to provide a more favourable environment for functional recovery. Dearbhaile also coordinates and teaches anatomy to undergraduate and graduate entry medical students as well as allied health students.

Image 3Khadija is a final year medical student at University College Dublin (UCD). She has a keen interest in research and has been involved in research from her early pre-clinical studies. Khadija has completed projects in the areas of oncology, neuroscience and ophthalmology. She was the recipient of the competitive Dean’s Scholarship for the UCD Student Summer Research Awards in 2020, which involved a fully-funded eight week international research project at the University of Pennsylvania. Khadija has presented at various conferences both nationally and internationally throughout her studies and hopes to continue building upon her research skills throughout her professional career.
