Sleeping away the stress

Stress can disrupt sleep patterns — either increasing or decreasing sleep duration, depending on the stressor to which an animal is exposed — and it has been suggested that sleeping after a stressful experience can help to boost resilience. In a recent study, Yu et al. dissect a circuit in the rodent midbrain that induces sleep in rodents exposed to social defeat stress (SDS), providing insight into the neural mechanisms that link stress and sleep.
