IL-17A–HIF1α axis in epithelial wound repair

Epithelial wound repair has long been thought to depend on cell-autonomous sensing of wound hypoxia by hypoxia-inducible factors (HIFs) in epithelial cells, leading to their migration. Moreover, it is also known from immunocompromised individuals and immunodeficient animals that the immune system is required for epithelial repair. Reporting in Science, Konieczny et al. help to define this immune–epithelial crosstalk by describing that IL-17 production by γδ T cells is required for optimal HIF1α activation in damaged epithelium.
