Farewell to Prof. Giovanni A. Fava after 30 Years and Welcome to the New Editors

It is not an easy task to farewell Giovanni A. Fava – a great Editor-in-Chief, a fantastic researcher and clinician, and a friend to Karger Publishers. We all do this with enormous respect for all that he has achieved and are really happy that he will remain with us as an author and advisor and a dear friend. Personally, I am already looking forward to my next get-together with him.

I highly recommend you read the Editorial of Professor Giovanni A. Fava ‘An Editor’s Journey Ends, but the Journal’s Mission Continues’. It is unbelievable what Professor Fava has initiated in thirty years. His astute insights for trends in publishing allied with his expert knowledge in the subject field of the journal propelled it to new heights of impact.

During Prof. Fava’s editorship the journal was also innovative in its field of studies. For example, he opened the journal to psychopharmacology and pharmacotherapy, psychological well-being and mindfulness. The journal never lost its focus on supporting clinical practice in combination with research, which might contribute to its consistent increase in readership. ‘A major determinant of selection was the clinical factor, the degree and the extent to which a paper provides information to the clinician that may improve his/her practice’ (see the editorial – page 221, 3rd paragraph). This is exactly what we at Karger Publishers have in mind with our claim ‘Connecting and Advancing Health Sciences’. Knowledge transfer from research to practice, from bench to bedside is key.

His editorial approaches also had important effects on publishing itself. For example, Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics was one of the first journals highlighting the need to disclose conflicts of interest from authors of medical research articles. I remember many discussions with Professor Fava that also had impact on our whole portfolio and more.

Professor Giovanni A. Fava is stepping down as the Editor-in-Chief of Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics. In this transition of editorship, it is very important for Prof. Fava and for the Editors-in-Chief taking over the journal, Prof. Fiammetta Cosci and Prof. Jenny Guidi, that the journal’s mission remains the same, and that authors and readers continue to experience the same level of support and attention that characterized the journal during the past thirty years.

Karger Publishers assures its support of the new Editors-in-Chief and the journal’s continued efforts to contribute to the advancement of psychotherapy and psychosomatics fields.

Let me end with a heartfelt thank you to Giovanni for all his work with Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics throughout the last thirty years and a warm welcome to Professors Cosci and Guidi as partners in the continued evolution of the journal.
