Rapidly escalating rates of hospital admissions for neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) have added substantial burden and challenge to an already overworked health system, especially in NICUs and special care nurseries (SCNs). Finnegan’s NAS instrument is the seminal instrument to measure NAS. Multiple short-form versions have been developed to reduce the time needed for screening. Studies reporting on validity and reliability have raised concerns about the quality of existing NAS instruments.
