Advances in Integrative MedicineAbstractBackground

Enuresis management necessitates both a non-pharmacological and pharmacological approach, aimed to find safe, effective, and simple method. The purpose of this study is to look into the effects of acupressure on the treatment of enuresis in children.

Methods

A total of thirty-two children who suffered from enuresis were involved in this study. Acupressure was performed by a certified therapist.

Results

There was a significant decrease in the frequency of enuresis after being given acupressure therapy compared to before acupressure therapy (p < 0.05).

Conclusions

It was concluded that acupressure can reduce the frequency of enuresis in children. Thus, acupressure can be an alternative treatment that is safe, inexpensive, and not invasive for enuresis.

Section snippetsBackground

The International Children's Continence Society defines nocturnal enuresis as intermittent incontinence that occurs while sleeping. The prevalence of nocturnal enuresis ranges from 3 to 15%, with 10% persisting into adulthood [1], [2], [3], [4], [5]. Boys are more likely than girls to suffer from nocturnal enuresis [6], [7]. In addition to having a personal and social impact on children, it has a negative impact on parents [8]. Monosymptomatic enuresis can be caused by nocturnal polyuria due to

Study design

This was a single-center study with pre and post-test groups. Participants will be observed both before and after the intervention. Before the trial, all participants' parents will be given and asked to sign informed consent forms. This research was conducted in an early childhood education center in Metro City, Lampung, Sumatera, Indonesia.

Participants

This study included children with enuresis as participants. Children diagnosed with enuresis, preschool age, and parents wanting to participate in the study

Subject characteristics

Table 1 presents the characteristics of the participants. A total of 32 children were involved in this study. The most dominant age distribution is three years (46.90%). The highest frequency of sex distribution is women (53.10%).

Frequency of enuresis

Fig. 2 shows the average frequency of enuresis before and after acupressure therapy. There was a significant decrease in the frequency of enuresis after being given acupressure therapy compared to before acupressure therapy (p < 0.05).

Discussion

Participants was involved in this study between the ages of 3-5 years. This suggests that enuresis can occur in children as young as five years old in Indonesia. This contradicts the theory that enuresis occurs at the age of five or older [20]. Furthermore, this study discovered female dominance. This finding contradicts previous findings that enuresis is more prevalent in boys [6], [7].

Enuresis affects children who sleep normally but are unable to suppress detrusor contractions or wake up in
