Fighting fire with fire: the immune system might be key in our fight against Alzheimer’s disease

Pieter Dujardin is a PhD student at Ghent University and the VIB-UGent Center for Inflammation Research in Ghent, Belgium. He was awarded an MSc in biochemistry and biotechnology by the Faculty of Sciences of Ghent University in 2020. His MSc thesis was on the characterization of anti-inflammatory biologicals and their therapeutical potential in a mouse model of Alzheimer’s disease. As doctoral , he is looking into the role of the complement pathway and extracellular vesicles in Alzheimer’s disease.

Roosmarijn E. Vandenbroucke is an associate professor in the Department of Biomedical Molecular Biology (Ghent University) and group leader at the VIB-UGent Center for Inflammation Research. She obtained her PhD in pharmaceutical sciences on nonviral nucleic acid delivery systems. As , she focused on the role of different molecules, such as IFNs, MMPs, and TNF, in inflammatory disorders, including sepsis, aging, and neurodegenerative diseases. Since 2015, she has headed the Barriers in Inflammation lab, which focuses on the effect of peripheral inflammation (including sepsis, aging, and gut inflammation) and neuroinflammation on neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases and multiple sclerosis.

Lien Van Hoecke is a junior postdoctoral researcher at Ghent University and the VIB-UGent Center for Inflammation Research. She is an immunologist with a strong focus on technology development and is interested in how we can use our own immune system in the fight against hard-to-treat diseases. During her PhD, she focused on the development of new immunotherapy strategies in the field of cancer and viral infections. For her postdoctoral research, she switched to the field of neurodegenerative diseases, where she uses her knowledge of the onco-immunotherapy field to accelerate the development of an immunotherapy-based strategy against Alzheimer’s disease.
