Associate Editor Jose E. Galgani, PhD

Jose Galgani, PhD, is an Associate Professor at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile in Santiago, Chile. His undergraduate training is in Nutrition and Dietetics at the University of Chile, where he also received his PhD degree in Nutrition. In 2007, he moved to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where he spent almost 3 years as a postdoctoral fellow at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center. His research interest is in human physiology and nutrition, especially in understanding fuel partitioning in obesity and type 2 diabetes. Dr. Galgani’s research has focused on the role of metabolic flexibility in metabolic health. Dr. Galgani has authored more than 80 peer-reviewed manuscripts and several book chapters and has edited one book about nutrition and health. Since 2014, he has been an associate editor for Obesity. He also teaches nutrition and metabolism to undergraduate and postgraduate students at his institution. Since 2017, he has served as Director of Research in the Department of Health Sciences at the Faculty of Medicine of his university. What is the discovery of which you are the proudest? During my training in nutrition, I began studying the role of carbohydrate quantity and quality in blood glucose and insulin response. I feel proud of a paper in which we showed how these two factors greatly influence glycemic response. I also contributed by adding a more comprehensive understanding of the concept of metabolic flexibility and its role in metabolic health. What gives you the most satisfaction in your job? To understand something complex and be able to create an innovative idea from that. I also get satisfaction after analyzing data and seeing something new. I also enjoy the challenge of portraying ideas in a manuscript and taking care of every detail to generate a clear and unique text. What is your favorite hobby? Reading and re-reading fiction and nonfiction. What would be your perfect vacation? To be with my family in the South of Chile, with no internet access or TV … Playing chess with my son, having a barbecue, and having many books around. What is your most treasured possession? My books, particularly the ones written by Umberto Eco, Haruki Murakami, José Saramago, and many other great writers. What famous living person would you like to have dinner with? Nuccio Ordine, an Italian author and philosopher. He wrote a fascinating book titled The Usefulness of the Useless. To make every minute count by appreciating the beauty in simple things. What is your greatest extravagance? To have none! image

Associate Editor Leonie Heilbronn, PhD

Leonie Heilbronn, PhD, is Associate Professor and Leader of the Obesity Metabolism Laboratory at the University of Adelaide and Deputy Director of the Nutrition and Diabetes Program within the Lifelong Health Theme at the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI). She received her PhD at the University of Adelaide in 2001, returning home to Adelaide after postdoctoral fellowships in the United States and Sydney. She is an associate member of the Australian Academy of Health Sciences and is the current Vice President of the Australian and New Zealand Obesity Society (ANZOS).

Dr. Heilbronn is an internationally recognized translational investigator who has made key contributions to the concepts of intermittent fasting and time-restricted eating in recent years. In total, she has published more than 130 peer-reviewed papers in topics covering energy metabolism, obesity, inflammation, insulin resistance, caloric restriction, and healthy aging. She was awarded the ANZOS Young Investigator of the Year award in 2007. Her H-index is 41. What is the discovery of which you are the proudest? We conducted the first ever study of intermittent fasting in humans, showing that it results in weight loss and fat mass loss and activates nutrient signaling pathways, kick-starting a long-standing interest in this area. What gives you the most satisfaction in your job? Guiding junior staff and students and forging new collaborations and directions. What would be your perfect vacation? Either hiking and camping in remote Australia or sitting poolside at a high-end resort, cocktail in hand, overlooking the ocean. What is your most treasured possession? Not really into possessions—my family!
