Bigels as drug delivery systems: from their components to their applications

María Dolores Veiga was awarded a PhD in pharmacy by the Complutense University of Madrid, where she is currently a professor in the Department of Pharmaceutics and Food Technology. She is an expert in the development and characterization of drug delivery systems, specifically those based on polymers and intended for vaginal administration for the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases.

Araceli Martín Illana is PhD candidate in the Department of Pharmaceutics and Food Technology of the Complutense University of Madrid. She is also the beneficiary of a University Professor Training fellowship granted by the Spanish Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport. Her thesis focuses on the development and characterization of Tenofovir-loaded vaginal dosage forms for the prevention of the sexual transmission of HIV.

Aitana Tamayo was awarded a PhD in chemistry by the Complutense University of Madrid and an MSc in biotechnology by the Autonoma University of Madrid. She has since worked at the Institute of Ceramics and Glass of the Spanish National Research Council, the University of Colorado at Boulder, and the Technical University of Darmstadt. She is an expert in the synthesis and characterization of porous ceramic and glass materials derived from the preceramic polymer route. She has developed multiple solutions based on the surface modification of specialized porous substrates for different applications, including biomedicine.
