The Multi‐National survey on Epidemiology, Morbidity, and Outcomes iN Intracerebral Haemorrhage (MNEMONICH)

Intracerebral haemorrhage (ICH) is a devastating condition with no treatment and poorly understood pathophysiology. Due to the significant societal burden and poor outcomes associated with ICH, enhanced understanding of this condition is a vital area of neuroscience research. The disappointing results of clinical trials aiming to identify treatment strategies in ICH may suggest that a considerably more far-reaching perception of this condition is needed. Achieving this, however, requires a global initiative.

The Multi-National survey on Epidemiology, Morbidity, and Outcomes iN Intracerebral Haemorrhage (MNEMONICH) is a consortium of collaborators from around the world aiming to evaluate clinical characteristics, disease behavior, management strategies, and outcomes of ICH. Established in 2015, MNEMONICH is a disease-specific registry of prospectively collected data obtained from the integration and harmonization of preexisting single-center datasets. There are currently 12 collaborating sites from Europe, South America, and the United States. MNEMONICH was formed to provide clinician–scientists around the world a comprehensive database to direct future studies toward a better understanding of ICH. It is our hope that MNEMONICH will help examine global variability in the prevalence of ICH and identify research priorities.

New data for MNEMONICH will be prospectively collected on a wide range of features including demographics, etiology, medical history, dates and times of symptom onset, presentation symptoms, hemodynamic signs, initial and chronic medical therapy, diagnostic imaging, laboratory and genetic analyses, pathological data, and surgical and medical management. Future research will be based upon post hoc analysis of this data.

Today, the Internet and cloud infrastructures have created new possibilities in global outreach, providing developed and developing countries the opportunity to engage in collaborative research. In that footing, the MNEMONICH Steering Committee invites interested sites across the globe – especially from the Far East, Middle East, and Africa – to join this platform. By joining forces, we can discover new horizons in overcoming the battle against this terrible condition.
