Spine

A pillar of vertebral bodies cast in cancellous bone, with a smooth arch extending around each vertebral foramen, all stacked in the midline on elastic discs to enclose the spinal canal inside a sinuous column, anchored from the sacrum and curving in segments of lumbar, thoracic and cervical to reach the atlas, that border zone between thought, and feeling and the call to action.

Guardian of the spinal cord's descending motor tracts, streaming like meridians through the foramen magnum, emerging as nerve roots spilling from intervertebral foramina, then travelling in a diaspora to their destinations, proximal and distal, on the body's skeletal muscle map.

And host to the peripheral currents of sensory stimuli, ascending in waves to wash through distant hemispheres.

From skull to coccyx - an axis of symmetry on which to fasten the shoulder girdle, fix the rib cage and sling the pelvis—fluent master, relay for a vertebrate's ceaseless choreography.
