The Organized Child: An Effective Program to Maximize Your Kid’s Potential—in School and in Life

Figure thumbnail fx1 For the parent who sighs when they discover yet another tattered paper randomly stuffed into the black hole of their child’s backpack, The Organized Child: An Effective Program to Maximize Your Kid’s Potential—in School and in Life might be a book for them. Dr. Gallagher and colleagues have written a book for parents to teach skills to their organizationally challenged 7- to 13-year-olds. Gallagher R. Spira E.G. Rosenblat J.L. The Organized Child: An Effective Program to Maximize Your Kid’s Potential—in School and in Life. These techniques are adapted from the Organizational Skills Program, which was created by Gallagher and colleagues, and, unlike the book reviewed here, is delivered by clinicians and has been shown to be effective for improving skills in children with ADHD. Abikoff H. Gallagher R. Wells K.C. et al. Remediating organizational functioning in children with ADHD: immediate and long-term effects from a randomized controlled trial. Those clinicians wishing to implement that program with patients themselves might prefer the authors’ clinical manual, Organizational Skills Training for Children with ADHD: An Empirically Supported Treatment. Gallagher R. Abikoff H.B. Spira E.G. Organizational Skills Training for Children with ADHD: An Empirically Supported Treatment. The authors hope that the benefits derived from their clinical program will translate to the parent-as-coach model presented in their new book, and also that the benefits of the program will extend to all children who struggle with organizational skills—not only those with ADHD.
