ID: 3523058 THE ADDITION OF WIDE-AREA TRANSEPITHELIAL SAMPLING WITH THREE-DIMENSIONAL COMPUTER-ASSISTED ANALYSIS (WATS3D) TO FORCEPS BIOPSY IN SCREENING EXAMS OF GERD PATIENTS WITH COLUMNAR EPITHELIUM INCREASES DETECTION OF INTESTINAL METAPLASIA

Screening upper endoscopy is recommended to assess for Barrett’s esophagus (BE). When columnar epithelium is noted in the esophagus, forceps biopsies are performed to assess for intestinal metaplasia (IM), which is necessary to diagnose BE. Sampling error with forceps biopsies may lead to failure to detect IM, thus requiring a repeat endoscopy for confirmation of a BE diagnosis. Wide-area transepithelial sampling with three-dimensional computer-assisted analysis (WATS3D) allows for sampling of more surface area than forceps biopsies, thereby decreasing sampling error. Its performance in increasing yield of IM during an initial endoscopy identifying esophageal columnar epithelium is poorly understood.
