AUA24 — pioneering shared decision-making and patient engagement strategies

Urologists, scientists and other professionals in the urology field converged in San Antonio, Texas, to attend the 119th edition of the American Urological Association (AUA) Annual Meeting. An intense and variegated programme was put together to cover the latest advances in different areas of urology, with an eye to the future of the field.

Providing an equitable health care for Black men, who experience a disproportionate incidence of prostate cancer and a higher probability of dying from this disease than white men, was one of the most covered topics throughout the meeting, starting from a panel discussion during day 1 about the necessity to increase prostate cancer screening in Black and Brown communities. In this panel, moderated by Samuel L. Washington from UCSF, panellists discussed increasing screening in these high-risk populations as a way to reduce cancer disparities. Increasing education and patients’ awareness were identified as the first necessary steps to achieve this ambitious result. Health equity was also the topic of the Journal of Urology Lecture held on day 2 by Quoc-Dien Trinh from Brigham & Women’s Faulkner Hospital. Dr Trinh highlighted the importance of community outreach initiatives to engage with patients and overcome racial disparities in access to prostate cancer treatment.
